Relation Precedes State

A fifth-dimensional love-field model of time, and its consequences for coordination and value

Two short documents circulated recently within the WiseValue group that deserve careful attention. They arrived not as finished arguments but as an unfolding inquiry — the kind of genuine question that carries more signal than most polished conclusions. What follows is an attempt to meet them seriously, because they are pointing at something structurally important, not merely philosophically interesting.

The core proposition is this: what if time is not the fourth dimension we experience as a conveyor belt of moments — past fixed, present fleeting, future absent — but instead a relational field in which past, present and future coexist as different modes of potential? And what if this field is governed not by mechanical sequencing but by a principle of coherence — of things tending toward integration rather than fragmentation — that the papers name love?

The framing is ambitious. But underneath it is a precise philosophical move that connects to work being developed independently in political economy — and bringing those directions together is worth attempting.

The Aristotelian move

Aristotle distinguished between two modes of being: potentiality (dynamis) and actuality (energeia). A seed is potentially a tree; an acorn carries the form of an oak before that form has been expressed. The field of potentiality is not nothing — it is structured, directional, full of latent form. What it lacks is actualization.

Proposing that a fifth dimension contains time as an Aristotelian potentiality field is exactly this move. In 3D+T experience — the ordinary four dimensions — we see only actualizations: collapsed states, determined outcomes, particles with positions. But the relational field beneath is not undetermined in the sense of random. It is pre-actual: coherent, tending, structured — just not yet forced into a single expression.

The uncertainty is not ignorance. It is not randomness. It is not even incomplete information. It is pre-actual relationality. The connection is primary. The state is secondary.

This is a genuinely different ontology from the one that underlies both classical physics and neoclassical economics. In both frameworks, the world consists of determinate entities with fixed properties interacting by contact. Value, in economics, is a property of goods. Particles, in physics, have states. The task of the observer is to measure these properties correctly.

The love-field model inverts this. Relation is not derived from entity. It precedes entity. The relational structure exists before the state is resolved. Quantum entanglement, on this reading, is not spooky: two entities are not communicating faster than light — they are participating in a shared relational field that was never fully localised in linear time in the first place.

Where the CAN framework intersects

The Contribution-Access Network framework is built on a related but distinct inversion. Conventional money is a proxy — a token that stands in for value rather than enacting it. The monetary system has three structural flaws: institutional hierarchy, enclosure of the commons, and usury. All three share a common root: they impose an abstract measurement layer on top of real relationships, and then treat the measurement as more real than what it measures.

The parallel with the love-field model of time is striking. Industrial time — clock time, Chronos — performs exactly the same function for lived experience that money performs for exchange. It imposes a single, linear, divisible, ownable unit onto a phenomenon that is inherently qualitative, relational, and multi-layered.

The Greeks had a word for the qualitative dimension of time that industrial civilisation suppressed: Kairos. Kairos is not a duration. It is a moment of ripeness, of alignment, of the right conditions converging. Agricultural cultures understood it. Healing cultures understand it. The industrial economy has no accounting category for it, which is precisely why it dismisses care work, contemplation, and relational labour as economically marginal — while depending on all three for its own reproduction.

A new symbolic order

The sharper practical question is this: if we are serious about a relational ontology of time, we need a new symbolic order for it. Civilisations change when they change what they measure, what they symbolise, and what they treat as real. Clocks did not merely measure industrial time. They created industrial time as social reality. The same is true of money, calendars, and algorithms — all are symbolic systems that crystallise one layer of a richer reality and then treat that layer as the whole.

This is where the Socratic method becomes structurally relevant. The Socratic method is not a teaching technique — it is a way of surfacing the assumptions embedded in existing symbolic orders. Socrates did not argue that the Athenians were wrong by presenting counter-evidence. He asked them what they meant by justice, by piety, by courage — and showed that their definitions contradicted themselves when examined carefully. The method works because symbolic orders are held in place not by logical necessity but by unexamined habit.

The question the WiseValue papers are asking about time is structurally Socratic: what do we mean by time? And when we examine it carefully, does our answer hold?

Candidate axiom — relational ontology

Time is the experienced ordering of relational actualization within a larger field of potential coherence. Clocks measure sequence. Consciousness experiences becoming.

The economic consequence

If this is right — even partially — it has direct consequences for the CAN framework’s proposal about direct value handling. One of the persistent objections to any post-monetary coordination system is: how do you account for time? How do you know how much someone has contributed if you can’t denominate their time in units?

The objection assumes Chronos. It assumes that time is a homogeneous substance measurable in identical, fungible units. An hour of care work equals an hour of data entry equals an hour of meditation — all measurable, all comparable, all priceable.

But if the relevant temporal category is not duration but coherence, not sequence but relational maturity, the objection dissolves. The question is not how many hours someone has contributed but what relational depth, trust density, and synchronisation capacity they have generated. These are not unmeasurable, but they require different symbolic tools — tools that the WiseValue papers are now beginning to sketch.

A relational symbolic order encodes not timestamps but states: “conditions are converging,” “the field is unstable,” “this relationship is crystallising.” This is not mysticism. It is a more accurate representation of what actually governs productive collaboration, healing, and collective learning than any clock-based metric.

Love as ontological principle

The word love deserves to be taken seriously here — not as sentiment. The papers are explicit that it is not emotional. Love, in this model, is the tendency of systems toward increasing relational integration, resonance, and mutual intelligibility. Fear fragments; ego isolates; love integrates.

This is close to what the CAN framework calls direct value handling: the capacity to meet living needs without the mediation of a scarcity-enforcing abstraction layer. Both proposals share the structural intuition that the coherence of a system — its capacity to integrate diverse contributions toward shared ends — is more fundamental than any single measurable unit extracted from it.

In this sense, love is not an addition to the framework. It may be its foundation. The question of why a distributed, autonomous, codependent system of self-organisation (DACSO) should remain stable over time — why it should not fragment into competing local optimisations — is precisely the question that this ontological principle addresses. Coherence is what the field tends toward. Fragmentation requires active imposition.

What remains open

These ideas are not finished. The model raises as many questions as it answers — not as a weakness, but as a sign that it is touching something real. Real structural insights tend to open territory rather than close it.

The questions worth holding: Can a symbolic order for relational time be developed that is practically operable — not just philosophically coherent? What would it mean to measure coherence rather than duration in a real coordination system? And how does the fifth-dimensional relational field intersect with the physical constraints of the DACSO dynamic — the energy, infrastructure, and embodied geography of actual communities?

These are questions for the continuing work. What the WiseValue papers offer is a framework precise enough to generate them — and that is exactly what good thinking at this stage should do.

The future is not a place that does not yet exist. It is a structured region of unrealised relational potential.

That sentence may turn out to be one of the most important reframings available to anyone trying to think clearly about coordination, value, and collective life after the industrial model collapses under its own contradictions. Relation precedes state. The connection is primary. The state is secondary.
